The German Saturday School of Houston is a non-profit educational corporation offering German classes for children ages 2-18. Classes are held in the rooms of Christ the King Lutheran Church, located at 2353 Rice Blvd. (directions). Tuition for the year is $400 plus $30.00 registration fee. Siblings attend at a discount. New families pay a one-time application fee of $30 per child.

The German Saturday Schoool offers extensive language courses for the serious student who would like to learn not only the language but also the geography, history, and customs of the German-speaking countries. Classes are conducted by native speakers. Weekly attendance and a moderate amount of weekly homework for the older children are required in order to obtain the maximum results from the class. As a means of furthering this end, all classes are conducted in German.

The following classes are offered:

Pre-school ages 3-4 with prior German experience
Kindergarten ages 4-7 with or without prior German experience
Vorschule ages 5-7, fluent German
Grundstufe grades 1-3, fluent German

The school has been in operation since 1986. Children from German-speaking countries who will be returning to Germany will find re-entrance into the German school system facilitated by attendance at the school because the German curriculum is followed.

The 2008/09 school year consists of two semesters totalling 30 weeks, beginning August 23, 2008. There will be a break for Christmas and for Thanksgiving. Classes are held Saturday mornings from 9:00 to11:45 a.m. Applications are now being accepted.

Please try to have your child here by 8:55 with a snack and drink, school supplies, and completed homework. Classes begin at 9:00 sharp. Dismissal is at 11:45. Kindergarten children must be picked up at 11:40 from the classroom. All other children are to wait inside the school, not in the parking lot.back to top

The Deutsche Samstagsschule has an extensive library with German magazines, audio tapes and books for all ages . All materials can be borrowed for up to 2 weeks. A good time for parents to browse our library holdings is during regular classtime. Children who have read the most books in each semester, are eligible for small prizes! Please encourage your children to read extensively in German! If you have any children's books you would like to donate or lend to the library, please give them to Frau Lira, the librarian. All donations to the Samstagsschule, including books, are tax deductible. If you would like a letter for IRS purposes, please ask Frau Engelhardt and she will be happy to provide such. back to top

All parents are invited to come for coffee each schoolday. This is an opportunity to get to know each other and to also provide and receive moral support for teaching your children German. There are all kinds of reading materials available, including newspapers, magazines and leaflets. This could be a good time for German conversation! - A small donation for coffee and cookies is appreciated. back to top

The Parent-Teacher Organization is responsible for the Christmas Party and the end-of-the-year pary. Help is needed! Someone needs to volunteer to be the chairperson (this is NOT an onerous task!). Please see Frau Eisele to volunteer. The sign-up sheet is in the narthex of the church. back to top
